HERMES

RETAIL STORE

Square footage: 3,000 sq. ft

Hermes is a women’s and men’s handbag, shoes, and accessory brand whose design style is classic through their use of fine materials, exquisite details and painstaking but refined craftsmanship. The concept of the project was based on the hand sewn stitches specific to a Hermes Bag. These stitches refer to a single loop of thread or yarn that is used not only to assemble and fasten garments together, but it is also a decorative embellishment. Because of this, stiches as a principle of design underline how an aesthetic beauty is derived from a function.
The store’s aesthetic was achieved through the organic and grandiose structure evident in the stacking process of custom acrylic boxes. Although the structure itself does not literally represent the stitches, the concept is displayed and evidenced through the uniformed rhythm of stitching represented by the stacked elements. A three dimensional form, created by the stacked boxes, creates a distinct three dimensional statement as it starts from the floor, rises over-head, then touches the floor only to rise up again. Timeless sophistication was the unifying theme and was ultilized by the use neutral colors of white and gray. Materials used are honed marble, lacquer finishes and translucent acylic.
